Insta360 X6: filming in 360 degrees without having to mount everything yourself
Insta360 X6 combines video 360 in 8K, large sensors, increased range and AI-assisted mounting in a compact housing sold now in Canada.

The 360 degree camera has a particular advantage: it records everything around it, allowing you to choose the framing after shooting. However, this freedom is accompanied by a real problem, namely the time it takes to sort and mount images.
With the new Insta360 X6, launched on August 12, 2026, the manufacturer seeks to improve video quality as well as reduce this post-production work.
Official announcement of the Insta360 X6
Larger sensors in a more compact housing
The X6 uses two 1/1.1-inch Sony square sensors, approximately 33% larger than the X5 sensors. Insta360 describes this configuration as 360 imaging "equivalent to an inch".
It should be noted, however, that these are not two real sensors of one inch. This technical distinction is important, even if the first independent tests report a visible improvement in the level of detail and in the low-lighted scenes.
Technical presentation by The Verge
The camera can record a complete scene in 8K at 50 frames per second. It can also function as a conventional action camera using a single lens, with a maximum resolution of 5K to 60 frames per second.
According to the manufacturer, its 2.32-inch OLED display has a maximum brightness of 1,200 nit. The housing is shorter and slightly lighter than that of the previous generation, although it is also a little wider and thicker.
Film first, choose the framing then
In 360 degree mode, both lenses record all directions simultaneously. The user can therefore decide after the fact whether the video should follow a person, show the landscape or change angle during the action.
The InstaFrame 2.0 function can also automatically track a person, animal or object to directly produce a conventional 4K video.
Insta360 also adds AI Director. While the camera recharges, this function must analyze the sequences and automatically prepare a video gathering the moments considered interesting. According to the company, the model used was trained over 10,000 hours of 360 degree content.
However, this is a function announced by the manufacturer. Its effectiveness may vary depending on the complexity of the scene and the creative choices of the user.
A camera designed for outdoor use
The X6 is IP68 certified and can be submerged up to 20 meters without additional housing. With the official diving box, the announced depth reaches 60 meters.
The targets remain replaceable in case of damage. Insta360 states that this second generation is five times more resistant to scratches and less expensive to replace. However, the very curved lenses of a 360 camera remain more exposed than those of a traditional camera.
The 2,600 mAh battery would provide up to 140 minutes of 8K recording at 30 frames per second. This manufacturer's estimate was reproduced closely in independent tests without overheating during continuous recording.

The battery is also designed to operate up to -20°C, a feature relevant to winter operations in Canada. Insta360 announces a charge of 0 to 80% in 24 minutes.
A really improved image quality
The camera supports the 10-bit color and the Dolby Vision directly into the camera. It also offers the I-Log profile for users who wish to perform their own color correction.
In his essays, TechRadar observed excellent quality in broad daylight and marked improvement in night scenes. The media nevertheless considers that the day-to-day gain from the X5 is rather progressive than revolutionary.
The manufacturer also announces a future direct integration to DaVinci Resolve. Since this function is not yet available at launch, it should not be considered an advantage acquired prior to delivery.
Prices and availability in Canada
The X6 is available in Canada in black or white.
Depending on the set chosen, its official price varies between approximately 939.99 and $1,254.99 Canadian. The standard set costs $939.99, while the Essentials set is displayed at $1,039.99. The diving package, which includes the specialized box and several accessories, reaches $1,254.99.

Limits or Considerations
The X6 is one of the most expensive compact 360 cameras on the market. To film occasional vacations or some sports activities, an X5 or a cheaper camera could be enough.
The software is also its main current weakness. During its evaluation, TechRadar found several mobile application crashes during assembly and export on an iPhone 13. The manufacturer recommends recent equipment for a more stable experience.
Finally, saving in 8K generates large files. There must be sufficient storage space and a computer or mobile device that is efficient enough for assembly.
Conclusion
Insta360 X6 does not just increase resolution. Its largest sensors, improved range, water resistance and automatic framing tools make 360 video more accessible.
It is intended primarily for travellers, athletes and creators who will really exploit its versatility. For this audience, it can replace several cameras. For an occasional user, its price and software requirements remain difficult to ignore.
